On the northern border of OK, northwest of Enid; original county; organized as County "M" in 1893 (prior to statehood); name changed later; re-formed Nov 16, 1907. Name Origin: For Lt. Col. Samuel N. Wood (?-1814), career army officer killed in the war of 1812. The letter s was a clerical error allowed to stand.
