Wilczek Land

 

an island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Area, 2,000 sq km. It is separated from the other islands by the Austrian Strait, and from Graham Bell Island to the northeast by Morgan Strait. Its surface is a plateau (altitude, 400-606 m), almost entirely covered by ice. The island is named after N. Wilczek, the financial backer of the Austrian expedition of J. Payer and K. Weyprecht, which discovered it in 1873.
