Location:23 miles southeast of Kulm, in Dickey County.
Facilities:Historic site, museum, picnic area with shelter, horseshoe pits, pit toilets. Open May 16-September 15, Thursday-Monday.
Special Features:Site marks the scene of the fiercest clash between Indians and whitesoldiers in North Dakota. On September 3, 1863, troops attacked a tipicamp as part of a military mission to punish participants of the DakotaConflict of 1862. In the ensuing battle, military casualties werecomparatively light, but hundreds of Indian men, women, and childrendied or were captured. The Indians also suffered the destruction ofvirtually all of their property, leaving them nearly destitute for thecoming winter. Today the site includes a portion of the battlefield,with a monument honoring the Indian dead and another honoring thesoldiers who died in the battle.
