whiplash injury

A neck injury caused by the application of sudden accelerative or decelerative forces to the body so that the neck bends acutely in a direction opposite to the direction of the force. This results in immediate reflex contraction of the stretched muscles so that the head is jerked in the other direction. Neck ligaments may be stretched or torn or a neck VERTEBRAE may be fractured. There is pain and disability, often for weeks, and an orthopaedic collar may be needed.
