Vilna Operation Of 1915

a defensive operation during World War I, fought between Aug. 9 (22) and Aug. 22 (Sept. 4), 1915, near the city of Vil’na by the Russian Tenth Army under General Radkevich of the Western Front against the German Tenth Army under General Eichhorn. After capturing Kovno on August 9, the German troops struck a blow between the Viliia and Neman rivers, bypassing Vil’na from the north in an attempt to encircle the main forces of the Russian Tenth Army, which were concentrated north and northwest of Vil’na. In meeting engagements that lasted until the end of August, both sides suffered great losses. The offensive of the Germans was halted, and the Germans were forced to change their plan and undertake the Sventsiany breakthrough of 1915.
