West, Joseph

(?–1692) colonist; born in England. He was the agent and storekeeper for the new settlement at Albemarle Point, South Carolina. He became governor in 1671 and led the fledgling colony through a year of scarcity. After a brief interruption, he served again as governor (1674–82) and the center of the colony was moved to New Charles Town (present-day Charleston).
