streptogramin

(strĕp-tō-gram'in), A synthetic protein that breaks down DNA, used to thin out the pulmonary secretions of patients with cystic fibrosis.

(strep'tō-gram'in) A mixture of two structurally distinct compounds, type A and type B, which act at the level of inhibition of translation through binding to the bacterial ribosome; separately bacteriostatic but bactericidal in appropriate ratios. Antibiotics quinupristin and dalfopristin are both streptogramins.
