Ulan Bator, University of
the state university of the Mongolian People’s Republic, founded in 1942. Between 1951 and 1961 pedagogical, agricultural, and medical institutes were founded on the basis of the university’s faculties. As of 1974, the university had faculties of physics and mathematics, chemistry and biology, the social sciences, economics, and philology, with departments of the Mongolian and Russian languages. The library’s holdings numbered more than 350,000 volumes. During the 1974-75 academic year, 3,000 students were enrolled at the university, and the teaching staff numbered 350, including 60 professors. Attached to the university is a polytechnic institute, founded in 1969. The institute trains engineers and scientific personnel in mining, power engineering, civil engineering, and technology.
