Sindhi

a people who constitute the principal population of the historical Sind region of Pakistan; some Sindhi also live in India. The Sindhi, who number 9.7 million (1971 estimate), speak the Sindhi language. The majority are Sunnites, but those in India are mostly Hindus.

The Sindhi are one of the most ancient peoples of the Indus Valley. Their culture shows the influence of the many conquerors who invaded Sind over the ages: the Greeks and the Macedonians, the Saka and the Ephthalites (White Huns), the Arabs, and the Afghan, Iranian, and Turkic peoples. Most of the Sindhi are land cultivators, cattle breeders, or fishermen, but some are employed in industry. The Sindhi played an active part in the national liberation struggle against the English colonialists.
