scolecodont[skō′lē·kə‚dänt] (paleontology) Any of the paired, pincerlike jaws occurring as fossils of annelid worms. Scolecodont a fossil worm jaw belonging to predatory polychaetes. A scolecodont looks like a black serrated curved plate 0.3–3 mm in size and consists of organic matter and silica. Scolecodonts are generally found in Ordovician and Devonian deposits. |
