Vsemirnaia Literatura

 

a Soviet publishing house that existed in Petrograd during the years 1918-24. Founded by the People’s Commissariat for Education on the initiative of M. Gorky.

Under Gorky’s guidance a plan was drawn up to publish the outstanding works of European and American belles lettres dating from the 18th century through the 20th. Approximately 200 titles were published; the books were supplied with introductions, historical and literary commentaries, and bibliographies.
