Rh immune globulin

Rh immune globulin

RhIg, Rho(D) immune globulin Obstetrics A sterile plasma-based preparation rich in anti-Rh antibodies used to prevent production of Rho(D) antibodies in Rh-negative mothers who may have an Rh-positive infant; its use virtually eliminates HDN due to maternal Rh-antibody production. See Hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Rh immune globulin

A solution of gamma globulin containing anti-Rh; it is given to Rh-negative women at 28 weeks' gestation to minimize the potential for sensitization secondary to transplacental bleeding. The injection is repeated within 72 hr after delivery of an Rh-positive newborn if the mother's indirect and the newborn's direct Coombs tests are negative. The globulin also should be given to Rh-negative women after spontaneous or induced abortion. Previously called Rho(D) immune globulin.See also: globulin
