New Echota State Historic Site
Location:1 miles east of I-75 exit 317, in Calhoun.

Special Features:In 1825, the Cherokee national legislature established a capital calledNew Echota at the headwaters of the Oostanaula River. During its shorthistory, New Echota was the site of the first Indian-language newspaperoffice, a court case which carried to the US Supreme Court, one of theearliest experiments in national self-government by an Indian tribe,the signing of a treaty which relinquished Cherokee claims to landseast of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of tribal members forremoval west on the infamous Trail of Tears. Today, visitors can seeseveral original and reconstructed buildings including the CouncilHouse, court house, print shop, and an 1805 store.
