Simonton method
Simonton method
A cancer therapy-enhancing method developed by radiation oncologist Oscar Carl Simonton, MD, and psychologist Stephanie Matthews-Simonton, which is based on the belief that psychological forces can play a significant role in cancer development and aggressiveness. Factors which might increase susceptibility to cancer hinge on the inability to cope with anger and depression, which may be related to traumatic events.The Simontons recommended the method only in conjunction with conventional anticancer therapy; it requires a highly motivated patient trained in the technique. The consensus of consultants at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the Mt Sinai Medical Center (both in New York), was that while the Simonton method may increase patient comfort and ability to deal with cancer, there is no scientific evidence that psychological and psychosomatic factors alter the course of cancer itself.
Simonton’s steps in therapy
• Counselling with a Simonton-trainee, the patient and family members;
• Muscle relaxation;
• Visualising the disappearance of the malignant cells.
