specialist registrar n (Medicine) a hospital doctor senior to a house officer but junior to a consultant, specializing in medicine (medical specialist registrar), surgery (surgical specialist registrar), or some subspeciality of either specialist registrar
specialist registrar A junior doctor in training under the pre-2006 system who was tracked to become a consultant. Pre-2006 SpRs and (second-year) SHOs are now merged into a single-specialty registrar (StR) grade, and their years of training known as ST1, ST2, ST3, etc. At the successful completion of the training, the doctor is awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
