Valuiki

 

a city, administrative center of Valuiki Raion, Belgorod Oblast, RSFSR. Located on the Valui River, 3 km from its confluence with the Oskol River. The city is a railroad junction, with lines to Staryi Oskol, Georgiu-Dezh, Kupiansk, and Kondrashevskaia. Population, 27,000 (1969). There are oil extraction, butter and cheese, and corn sorting plants, a cannery, flour milling and meat combines, and railroad transport enterprises. A sugar refinery is under construction (1971). A medical and a pedagogical school are also located there. Valuiki was founded at the end of the 16th century as a fortress against Tatar raids.
