(1) In Rus’ from the tenth to 15th centuries, a mounted scouting detachment, sent forward while on the march to reconnoiter and to intercept the enemy’s mounted patrols and unmounted scouts.
(2) From the 15th through 17th centuries, a small mounted unit sent forward to or beyond the lines of the abatis. Storozhi were on duty from early spring to late autumn—the most likely time for Tatar raids—forming a line of observation posts linked by mounted patrols.
