Sigillariaceae

Sigillariaceae

(or Sigillariales), a family or order of fossil arborescent club mosses. The Sigillariaceae lived in the tropics of the Euramerican region during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. The columnar trunks, which were 10–12 m high and nonbranching or dichotomously branching at the top, had weakly developed xylem and thick bark marked with regularly arranged leaf scars. The large heterosporous strobiles were borne by the end of the trunk. The leaves were narrow.
