South Equatorial Current[′sau̇th ‚ek·wə′tȯr·ē·əl ′kə·rənt] (oceanography) Any of several ocean currents, flowing westward, driven by the southeast trade winds blowing over the tropical oceans of the Southern Hemisphere and extending slightly north of the equator. Also known as Equatorial Current. South Equatorial Current a warm surface current that flows east to west in the southern tropical latitudes of the world ocean. The South Equatorial Current originates as a result of the action of the trade winds. In the Pacific Ocean it is a continuation of the Peru (Humboldt) Current; in the Atlantic Ocean, of the Benguela Current; and in the Indian Ocean, of the West Australian Current.
