Tax, Sol

(1907– ) cultural anthropologist; born in Chicago. Educated at the Universities of Wisconsin and Chicago (Ph.D. 1935), he carried out field studies among the North American, Guatemalan, and Mexican Indians, and had a long career as a professor of anthropology at Chicago. As a longtime associate at the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, he promoted many expeditions and field campaigns. His publications include Evolution after Darwin (3 vols. 1960). He was editor of American Anthropologist from 1953–56.
