a river in the Vologda and Arkhangel’sk oblasts of the RSFSR. Largest left tributary of the Severnaia Dvina.
The Vaga River is 575 km long, and the area of its basin is 44,800 sq km. It has its source in swamps and flows through a forested area. The Vaga freezes in mid-November, and the ice breaks up at the end of April. The average annual discharge of water is 384 eu m per sec (at the village of Shegovary). Its principal tributaries are the Kuloi, the Ust’ia (from the right), and the Vel’ (from the left). The Vaga is suitable for floating logs and is navigable (at high water) from Vel’sk. Its chief landings are Vel’sk and Shenkursk.
