Stradiot (also Shqipetar, or Albanian), in the Middle Ages, a mercenary irregular light cavalryman, recruited by the Italian states, primarily Venice, and by France in areas now in Albania (Shqiperi) and Greece. The stradiot’s weapons and dress were modeled after the Turkish; instead of a turban, however, the stradiot wore a light helmet. |
