Location:5 miles southeast of Equality in southeastern Illinois, bordering theShawnee National Forest (see separate entry in national forestschapter).
Facilities:Tent and trailer campsites (no electricity), horsemen's campground,picnic areas, concession, hiking trails (9 miles), equestrian trails,boat rentals, boat ramps, 2 docks.
Activities:Camping, boating (10 HP limit), fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting.
Special Features:Site of springs and wells that furnished brine for one of the two saltworks in the area. Before the first settlers arrived, Native Americansalso produced salt from the springs here. Extracting salt from thesprings' water became too expensive once commercial producers beganmanufacturing salt, and the land that was once so highly prized wassold off.
