Whittaker, Robert H. Whittaker, Robert H. (Harding)(1920–80) botanist, ecologist; born in Wichita, Kans. He taught zoology at Washington State College (1948–51), then became a senior scientist in biology at Hanford (Wash.) Atomic Products Operations (1951–54). He moved to Brooklyn College (1954–64), then was a visiting biologist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, N.Y. (1964–66). He moved to the University of California: Irvine (1966–68), then joined Cornell (1968–80). He made major contributions to the ecological niche theory in his classifications of plant communities. |
