Alekseev, Petr Petrovich

 

Born Apr. 14 (26), 1840; died Feb. 6 (18), 1891. Russian organic chemist.

Alekseev was graduated from the University of St. Petersburg. From 1868 until the end of his life he was a professor at the University of Kiev. He discovered a method for making azobenzene through the action of an excess of zinc powder in an alcohol solution of nitrobenzene in the presence of caustic soda (1867); this method proved of great importance in industrial and laboratory work with all classes of nitrogen compounds.
