SalatSalat(Arabic, literally, “prayer”), in Islam, one of the chief rites, an act of worship repeated five times daily; known as namaz among Muslims of non-Arab countries. The salat was instituted in the first century of the Hegira (seventh century A.D.). It is performed at dawn, noon, midafter-noon, sunset, and nightfall. Each time, the prayer is preceded by obligatory ablutions with water or sand. Excerpts from the Koran are recited in Arabic while the worshipers face in the direction of the Kaaba.
