Saint Joseph

A city of northwest Missouri on the Missouri River north of Kansas City. It grew as a supply depot in the 1850s and became the eastern terminus of the Pony Express in 1860.

river, 210 mi (338 km) long, rising in S Mich. and flowing generally westward in wide curves to Lake Michigan at Benton Harbor, Mich. South Bend, Ind., is on the river, which was an important link to the Ohio River and Lake Erie for pioneer travelers.

husband of the Virgin Mary, a carpenter, a descendant of the house of David. He was apparently dead at the time of the Passion, for his last appearance in the Gospels is at the finding of the 12-year-old Jesus in the temple (Luke 2.42–50). As the foster father of Jesus and the chaste spouse of Mary, St. Joseph is highly honored by Orthodox and Roman Catholics. The latter regard him as patron of the Church. Native American villages, a Jesuit mission, Fort Miami (1679), and a fur-trading post occupied the site before permanent American settlement began c.1830. The city is a large market for livestock and grain, and has meatpacking and food- and leather-processing plants.
