Soil Algae

Soil Algae

algae that live on the surface of or in soil. About 2,000 species of microscopic soil algae are known, mainly blue-green, green, yellow-green, and diatom algae. Developing mostly in the upper soil horizons (about 200,000 cells in 1 cm3), they synthesize organic matter and help to improve the soil structure. Some blue-green algae fix atmospheric nitrogen.
