a city in the southern part of the Mongolian People’s Republic on the Moscow-Ulan Bator-Peking railroad line. Capital of the aimak (administrative division) of East Gobi. Population, approximately 10,000 (1975, estimate). The city is the center of a network of highways and unpaved roads. There is a food-processing combine and a plant producing alabaster. Coal is mined. There is an electric power plant.
