Amiranashvili, Shalva Iasonovich

 

Born Mar. 26 (Apr. 7), 1899, in Oni, Georgian SSR. Soviet historian of Georgian and Iranian art; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1943); academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1955). Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Amiranashvili studied at the University of Tbilisi (1918–22); he has taught there since 1925 and held a professorship since 1936. Since 1939 he has been director of the Museum of Arts of the Georgian SSR in Tbilisi. His basic works are Beka Opizari (1939, expanded edition 1956), Iranian Paintings of the XVIII-XIX Centuries (1941), History of Georgian Art (1961, 1963), and Georgian Miniatures (1966). Amiranashvili has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and a medal.
