a person's overall standing within a social stratification system (LAZARSFELD et al., 1944; GOLDTHORPE AND HOPE, 1974). Imprecisions and uncertainties as to what such general notions refer to, compared with more analytically focused notions of CLASS and STATUS, have meant that the concept has attracted criticism (see MILLS, 1959). see also SOCIAL STRATIFICATION.
