Superman Revenge Squad

Superman Revenge Squad

(pop culture)Showing their sinister solidarity by each plunging a dagger into a Superman emblem, the Superman Revenge Squad is sworn to annihilate the Man of Steel. Superman first meets these extraterrestrial terrorists in Action Comics #287 (1962), when they attack him with red kryptonite in retribution for his preventing their earlier conquest attempts. Uniting as a formidable force, these “Revengers”—with otherworldly names like Dramx, Vlatuu, and Nakox—perpetually plot against the Man of Steel in their Hall of Hate on a desolate planet and wear somber variations of Superman's uniform with emerald insignias that glow like green kryptonite. Perhaps their most noteworthy adventure occurred in World's Finest Comics #175 (1968), which introduced the Batman Revenge Squad (in purple Batman costumes with bat-winged skulls on their chests). This was the first Batman tale illustrated by Neal Adams, who would later distinguish himself as the hero's premier artist of the 1970s; it was also Adams' first pairing with inker and partnerto- be Dick Giordano. A Superboy Revenge Squad briefly appeared in 1982. While a clever story gimmick, the Superman Revenge Squad failed to achieve significant acclaim due to its interchangeable roster of underdeveloped characters. A 1996 revival of the Squad assembled established Superman villains—the replicating Riot, the human arsenal Barrage, the magician Misa, the “absorbing man” Anomaly, and the spurned superwoman Maxima—who succeeded in defeating Superman, but petty infighting enabled the hero to rise to victory. A later incarnation with Baud and Rock joining returnee Barrage and old-timer the Parasite also failed to overcome the hero. The Superman Revenge Squad made a cameo appearance in the “Hereafter” episode of the TV cartoon Justice League Unlimited (2004–present).
