Tam Pong
Tam Pong
a cave in Laos, situated northeast of the city of Luang Prabang. The cave was discovered in 1936 by the French archaeologists J. Fromaget and E. Saurin, who excavated three cultural layers. The lowest, dating from the Mesolithic Hoa Binh culture, contained a female skull and flaked implements made from river pebbles. The two upper layers, dating from the early Neolithic Bac Son culture, contained stone axes with polished blades. The skull, belonging to a representative of the ancient Mongoloids, dates from a period before all the specific physical traits of that major race had developed.
