StanhopeaStanhopeaa genus of plants of the family Orchidaceae. The perennial, mostly epiphytic, herbaceous plants have single-leaved stems that are thickened like rhizomes to form pseudo-bulbs. The large irregular flowers measure 15–18 cm across and are in pendulous inflorescences; they are cream-colored or yellowish orange and have dark purple spots. The flowers have a strong fragrance resembling that of vanilla. There are about 50 species, distributed in tropical regions of Mexico and South America.
