[krō′māsh·ē·əm] (microbiology) A genus of bacteria in the family Chromatiaceae; cells are ovoid to rod-shaped, are motile, do not have gas vacuoles, and contain bacteriochlorophyll a on vesicular photosynthetic membranes.
