(pen?i-sil'o-il?pol?i-li'sen?) The major antigenic determinant of penicillin. It is used in skin testing for penicillin sensitivity.

Patient care

When it is injected intradermally into a sensitive person, an allergic reaction occurs within 20 min. Tested patients should be monitored for wheals, hives, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.
