penetrating top

penetrating top

A domelike penetration above a thunderstorm anvil representing a very strong updraft and, hence, a high potential for severe weather within that storm. There are two types of penetrating tops. One is short-lived; it forms and dissipates in cycles and indicates the presence of a pulse or cyclic storm. The other is a persistent and/or anvil dome, often present on a supercell. Also referred to as an overshooting top.
