Sergei Afanasev
Afanas’ev, Sergei Aleksandrovich
Born Aug. 30, 1918, in Klin, Moscow Oblast. Soviet party and state figure. Member of the CPSU since 1943.
Afanas’ev was born into the family of an office worker. His first job was as a senior adjuster of automatic machine tools at the Likhachev automobile plant. After graduating from the Moscow Bauman Higher Technical School (1941), he worked as an engineer for enterprises in Moscow and Perm’. He held high posts in the Ministry of Armaments and the Ministry of the Defense Industry from 1946 to 1957. From 1957 to 1961 he was vice-chairman, first vice-chairman, and chairman of the Leningrad Economic Council. From 1961 to 1965 he was vice-chairman of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR and chairman of the Economic Council of the RSFSR. He has been minister of general machine building since 1965. He was elected a member of the Party Central Committee at the Twenty-second Congress (1961) and Twenty-third Congress (1966) of the CPSU and a deputy to the sixth and seventh convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and to the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. He received the State Prize of the USSR (1952) and has been awarded four Orders of Lenin and two other orders, as well as medals.
