Preparation Fire for an Assault

the delivery of strikes by artillery, aviation, and other means of fire against an enemy defense before and during an assault. Its purpose is to neutralize and destroy manpower, means of fire, and combat materiel; to destroy defensive structures; and to deprive the enemy of the capability of offering organized resistance to the attacking troops.
