Web: www.volcaniclegacybyway.org Description:The Oregon section of the byway offers access to Crater Lake National Park, which features the deepest lake in the United States. Other areas of interes include: 90,000-acre Upper Klamath Lake, the largest body of fresh water west of the Rockies; Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges, where visitors can see more than a million birds during peak migrations in the fall; Favell Museum, offering displays of more than 100,000 artifacts from tribes around the world; Fort Klamath, established in 1863 to protect immigrant trains from Native American attack and to maintain peace in the region during the Civil War; and the Winema and Umpqua national forests, which offer many recreational opportunities.
Legth: 140 miles (Oregon section); 500 miles (total length). Start/Endpoint: Byway includes sections in northern California and southern Oregon. In Oregon, byway runs from the Diamond Lake Junction on US97 about halfway between Bend and Klamath Falls south to the Oregon-California border on US 97. Time to Allow: 1 day. Designation/Year: All-American Road (1998).
