PotoroinaePotoroinae(rat kangaroos), a subfamily of marsupials. There are four genera, which comprise eight species. The body measures 25–55 cm long and the tail, 15–40 cm. The weight ranges from 1 to 3 kg. The Potoroinae are distributed in Australia and Tasmania. They inhabit steppes, thickets, and forests, living in burrows, crevices, and grassy nests. They are nocturnal animals. Most are herbivorous; some are omnivorous. The Potoroinae reproduce several times a year, each time bearing one young, which the mother carries in her pouch for about four months. Many species are few in number.
