role reversal

role reversal

any situation in which people exchange roles so that one plays the role of the other, e.g. master and servant, adult and child, male and female roles. In any societies institutionalized provision exists (e.g. Roman saturnalia - periods of feasting and social laxity) for such reversals to occur, seen as having the function of releasing the social tensions created by the constraints of ROLE. In present-day British society, office parties have been suggested as haying a similar function. See also CARNIVAL.
