Torez

 

(until 1964, Chistiakovo), a city under oblast jurisdiction in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Population, 116,100 (1975). Torez has a railroad station on the Chernukhino-Ilovaisk line. Coal is mined near the city. Industrial establishments include an electrical equipment plant, a factory that manufactures reinforced-concrete mine supports, a shop specializing in machine repairs, a milk plant, a meat-packing plant, a food processing combine, and a furniture factory. A general technology department of the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute, a mining technicum, and a medical school are in the city. Torez was named for M. Thorez.
