Bombelli, Raffaele

 

Born circa 1530; died circa 1572. Italian mathematician and engineer. In his book Algebre (1572), Bombelli gave the first exposition of the simplest rules for operations on complex quantities and their application to the study of the so-called irreducible case of the cubic equation.
