Paine, Charles Jackson

Paine, Charles Jackson

(1833–1916) yachtsman, lawyer; born in Boston, Mass. He was admitted to the bar in 1856. He rose from Union captain to brigadier general (1861–66) during the Civil War. He owned and raced the legendary yachts, the Mayflower, Puritan, and Volunteer, in international competition. He later invested in railroad companies.
