TrehaloseTrehalosea carbohydrate of the group of nonreducing di-saccharides. In natural trehalose, two D-glucose radicals are united by an α, α-glycoside bond. Trehalose was first isolated from ergot; it is also contained in algae, yeasts, higher fungi, lichens, some higher plants, and the hemolymph of a number of works and insects. A rich source of trehalose is the exudate of the ash tree (Trehala manna), which is secreted as a result of an insect sting. Tubercle bacilli have been found to contain two derivatives of trehalose: the highly toxic cord factor, in which trehalose is bonded to two molecules of a higher fatty acid, and phosphoglucan, in which trehalose radicals are joined in to a linear chain by a phosphodiether bond. Biosynthesis of trehalose phosphate occurs with the participation of uridine diphosphate glucose. trehalosetre·ha·lose(trē'hă-lōs),trehalose(trĭ-hä′lōs′, -lōz′)tre·ha·lose(trē-hā'lōs)trehalose(tre-ha'los) |
