Volzhenskii, Aleksandr Vasil’evich

Born Aug. 27 (Sept. 8), 1899, in the village of Alt-Kliuchi, Buguruslan District, in present-day Orenburg Oblast. Soviet scientist in the field of technology of structural materials and products. Became a doctor of technical sciences in 1946, and an Honored Scientist and Engineer of the RSFSR in 1960.

After graduating in 1925 from the Tomsk Technological Institute, Volzhenskii worked in enterprises of the structural building-materials industry, in higher educational institutions, and in scientific-research institutions. In 1949 he began teaching at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute (having become a professor in 1948). Volzhenskii was the first to work out theoretical bases for the technology of autoclave materials; he did important work on the improvement of the properties of gypsum binders and the creation of gypsum-cement-pozzolana binders and also on the establishment of the technological principles of large-scale gypsum concrete and silicate concrete objects. He has received the Lenin Prize (1962), the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
