Mrazec, Ludovic

Born July 17, 1867; died June 9, 1944, in Bucharest. Rumanian geologist. Member of the Rumanian Academy of Sciences (1905) and the academy’s president from 1932 to 1935.

Mrazec was a professor at the University of Bucharest from 1894. From 1906 to 1928 he was director of the Rumanian Institute of Geology, which he founded.

With the Swiss geologist L. Duparc, Mrazec conducted research in the Alps and Urals. His principal works were devoted to the mineralogy, petrography, and tectonics of the Carpathians, the geology of the oil-bearing regions of Rumania, and the genesis of petroleum. He introduced the use of the term “diapirism.”
