(full name, Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), the central research institute concerned with mathematical problems involved in the application and development of computers. Located in Moscow, it became separate from the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1963. M. V. Keldysh has been its director since its founding.

The institute has outlined fundamentally new possibilities for the application of mathematics. It was the first organization in the USSR to become familiar with and make use of computers; it acquired experience on the basis of which there were laid the foundations of the methods of computer mathematics and computer software. The institute has worked on mathematical problems in nuclear engineering, the mechanics of spaceflight, and other fields. It has also done work in a number of areas of classical mathematics. The institute was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1967.
