New England Colonial style New England Colonial style (1600–1700)A local style characterized by a use of natural materials in a straightforward manner. The box-like appearance is relieved by a prominent chimney and sparse distribution of small, casement-type windows. The characteristic shape, formed by extending the rear roof to a lower level than the front roof, was called a saltbox. In larger structures the upper floor projected beyond the lower floor, creating an overhang called a jetty. |
